Since
1993, Tradewinds has produced a superior quality printed
catalog for each of our live auctions (left panel: an
example cover). Our catalogs contain detailed descriptions
and important information on each lot (right panel,
an example interior page). Since 2000, they have featured
full-color studio-shot digital photography. Our catalogs
are approximately 200 pages long and typically contain
over 450 photos. In addition to being a great resource
for upcoming sales, our catalogs from past sales are
important references for cane enthusiasts and have themselves
become collector's items.

In
1993, Tradewinds conducted the first-ever public auction
dedicated entirely to antique walking sticks in the
United States. Since then, we hold live auctions in
the spring and fall of each year in the historic city
of Salem, Massachusetts. Each sale offers around 200
walking sticks which span a wide range of cane collecting
interests. Lots include decorative, nautical, ivory
figural, historical and gadget canes with pieces suitable
for all levels of cane collectors. Our sales are attended
by cane collectors, antiques and collectibles enthusiasts,
people with a general curiosity about this hobby and
often the antiques news media.
The evening before
each live auction, we host a pre-auction reception that
typically features either a lecture or live music. Past
speakers include book authors, a photo journalist and
museum curators, and talks have ranged from aspects
of cane collecting to topics in decorative arts. The
reception is catered with a cash bar and includes a
preview of the canes to be sold the following day. It
is a fun event that provides ample time to mingle with
other collectors, re-connect with old friends and interact
with the Tradewinds staff.
